Convicted paedophile and former Queensland Labor leader Keith Wright has died in Vietnam.

In 1983, Toowoomba-born Wright came close to toppling Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen and becoming premier.

A decade later, the Baptist preacher was jailed for eight years for indecent dealing and child rape.

In 2009 the former leader broke a 16-year silence to express regret and sorrow over sexual dealings with girls that cost him more than five years in jail.

“Yes, I really blew it man,” The Courier Mail reported Wright as saying.

“I was so stupid. And I profoundly regret it all. I am so sorry.

“I regret it for the girls, I regret it for my family, I regret it for myself and I regret it for those in the community who looked up to me.”

Wright was educated at the University of Queensland and Kelvin Grove Teachers College in Brisbane before becoming a teacher and author.
