Update to modernise and harmonise classification guidelines 2025
The latest review of Australia’s classification guidelines for films, publications and computer games is now open for public consultation.
The Update states:
The aim is a simpler, more consistent approach across films, games and publications, supported by modern technology and clearer consumer advice.
The concepts…are designed to protect without overreach, inform without censorship, and reflect Australia’s diversity.
Previous reviews and reports to the Federal Government recommending updates to Australia’s classification system, including the “Review of Australian classification regulation (the Stevens Review)” published in 2023, were largely ignored, left on the shelf to gather dust.
Films and magazines are no longer bread-and-butter products of Australia’s adult-oriented products and services industry. However, due to the reliance of the Online Safety Act 2021 and related online safety industry codes on the current classification code and guidelines, this current review is welcome, if long overdue.
