X Fined $650,000 for Online Safety Compliance Breach

The Guardian Australia 21 May 2026 – The Federal Court has fined Elon Musk’s X social media network $650,000 for failing to provide Australia’s eSafety Commissioner with information about how X was “tackling online child sexual abuse material”. The long running case was commenced more than three years ago against Twitter, prior to its merger with X Corp. X had argued that “it did not have to comply with the notice because Twitter stopped being a company after the merger.”
