As reported in The Guardian on 7 October 2025 online messaging app Discord has advised users that a breach of identity data resulted in the theft of personal information including government ID’s, driving licence and passport details, personal names, and addresses.
According to The Guardian ‘Discord began using facial age assurance to check the age for users in the UK and Australia earlier this year. The company said facial images and ID images “are deleted directly after” ages are confirmed, but Discord’s website noted that if verification fails, users can contact the trust and safety team for a manual review.’ It is understood that a manual review can include the provision of a user’s ID documents.
Discord said that their proof of age services had been performed by an external provider who was the subject of the data breach.
This is yet another concerning example of the risk of theft of individuals’ personal and private information posed and enabled by the mandatory imposition of age assurance and age verification technologies on the broader population.
